Professional Development

In Ohio, teachers have a lot of choices when it comes to professional development. Licensed teachers use the IPDP (Individual Professional Development Plan) as part of the license renewal process. In this process, they decide what they need to work on in order to improve their teaching practice.

The Partnership for 21st Century Skills lists skills that 21st century students need in order to succeed. Given the fact that we cannot guess what careers will be available, since careers have changed so drastically in the last ten years, it makes sense to teach students the skill sets necessary for the next generation to be able to succeed amidst continuing technological change.

Our activity today is to look at the Partnership for 21st Century skills, to think about your own skills as a teacher in relation to these, to consider your education program in light of these skills and to determine areas that you will want to pursue so that you are able to give your students the foundation they need for their adult lives.

In essence, professional development is ultimately about what you choose to do to improve your teaching practice. What will you choose?

Work in groups to figure out the kinds of things that your current education curriculum covers, the kinds of things not covered, and some ideas to meet those professional development needs. Look for free resources such as MOOCs, online tutorials, and the like. Put your results as a group in the following document (don't repeat what someone else already has in there). We will have a set of information and resources on professional development.
